Invitation to Africa Day Indaba on 23 May 2025

Dear colleagues

Do you research or do any work on or in Africa, are you engaged with and have interest in African communities, students and studies, in Australasia and the Pacific or globally? If yes, you are cordially invited to attend the online Africa Day Indaba 2025. The event will be held on Friday 23 May 2025 from 1pm-230pm Sydney time. It is through events like this that you deepen your understanding of Africa, its history, its philosophy (Ubuntu) and its future directions.

A concept brief for the event is available here.

Africa Day is commemorated on 25 May each year. This annual celebration marks the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), and serves as an important occasion to raise awareness about Pan-African ideals, African history and help shape the continent’s journey towards socio-economic and political development. This year the event starts with guest speeches followed by an inter-generational dialogue on How and why African ideals, along with the narratives of other diasporic and colonised peoples, help to critically examine and address racism in Australia and globally.

Guest Speaker: Dr Barbara G Reynolds (Guyana), Vice-President for Administration, Advancement and Planning at the University of the Southern Caribbean in Trinidad and Tobago, Member of the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. Topic: A narrative of reparations in the context of Black people enslaved out of Africa.

Thank you very much for considering this invitation.
